New Deal For Communities
Whitefriars
Housing Group Limited has been working in partnership with
Coventry’s New Deal for Communities (NDC) team since 2001, when the
Government announced an NDC programme of £54m over a 10 year period.
The NDC initiative is resident-led and we are represented on its
Partnership Board. The NDC area is situated in the North East of
Coventry and includes Wood End, Henley Green, Manor Farm and
Deedmore.
Whitefriars supports a number of NDC projects, including
Neighbourhood Wardens and a Professional Witness Scheme to tackle
anti-social behaviour.
Whitefriars,
the major landlord and land owner in the area, has worked with NDC
and Coventry City Council to develop a master plan with residents
and to set up of a Joint Venture Company. The master plan aims to
radically redevelop and regenerate these estates through private
investment of around £360m, creating a mixed and sustainable
community.
The estates have suffered from long-term decline and were attracting adverse publicity for crime and anti-social behaviour. We aim to improve the quality of life for existing communities and to attract new tenants.
Details of the regeneration scheme and master plan have since been developed, and in March 2006, the first stages of the contract were agreed between the developer consortium of which Whitefriars is a lead member.
Over 300 residents attended a number of events to learn about the development of their area. The scheme will comprise building around 2,500 houses for sale, 1,000 new homes for rent by Whitefriars and 150 homes for people who will initially move out due to the regeneration. The 12-15 year development programme will start in 2008.
We are committed to working with our tenants to make things as easy as possible for them through the changes.
