Getting extra help – Independent Living

Our Independent Living Team provides a comprehensive service to support people in everyday aspects of life such as financial or health issues.

The Independent Living Team

Whether a resident needs, for example, one-off financial advice or a full support plan covering all aspects of their lives, the Independent Living Team will work with them to meet their needs and enable them to live as independently as possible in their own homes.

To enhance its service, it works with a wide network of agencies across the City. These include the Alcohol Advisory Agency, Domestic Violence Support Agencies, Coventry Cyrenians and many more.

It can also offer specialist accommodation for the elderly and the homeless which is owned and managed by Whitefriars. For more information, see our ‘Supported Accommodation’ page on this site

New tenants’ scheme

Our New Tenants’ Support Service can give you the help you need to live independently in your new home.

We can help you...

Set up and run your home well, for example, giving you advice on managing your money, on home security or insurance.

Get involved with your local community – finding local services, looking for a job or training course, or making use of your leisure time.

Seek extra help such as talking about problems, getting expert advice on things like debt, mental health, drugs or alcohol, or contacting Social Services or other organisations.

What are the benefits for you?

You will get your own tenant support officer who will talk through any problems with you. They will agree a ‘support plan’ with you, so you know what to expect from them and how often they will visit you.

Our aim is to help you to sustain your tenancy and live independently – so after a time you won’t need us anymore. However, you can always come back for further advice if you need help in the future.

Older persons’ scheme

‘Our Older Persons’ Tenancy Support Service can give you the help you need to live independently. The scheme provides assistance with many practical aspects of everyday life such as finances and security. Our staff will additionally keep an eye on the health and welfare of these more vulnerable residents, and call in other agencies to assist with support if necessary. To qualify for this service you must:

  • Be over 55 and a Whitefriars’ tenant
  • Live alone or with someone who is elderly
  • Not live in sheltered accommodation.

What will you get?

A support worker will visit you at least once a week. They will help you with things like paying bills, claiming benefits, security and home safety, keeping to your tenancy agreement and encouraging a social life. They will keep an eye on your health and welfare and call in other agencies to assist with supporting you if necessary. They can also set up a 24 hour emergency response alarm should you feel you require one
